When we create our programs, we usually donít anticipate anything will go wrong. And it wonít, during development and testing. But in production there is always someone who does something unexpected and your code fails. When running in dev you can easily step through your code and see what happens, but in production you are not allowed to do this. How great would it be that you could see what was happening in the production environment? But logging every step takes up a lot of the performance. Installing debuggable code in production just to see whatís going on is usually a no-go. By instrumenting your code you can get the information you need by ëflipping a switch.í
This session shows how easy it is to instrument your code using the Open Source Logger Framework to trace the steps in production without having to install a new piece of code.

Most modern computer applications include an "advanced search" screen that allows users to enter multiple criteria and parameters. Unfortunately, behind the scenes, this functionality can cause major implementation headaches on the back end because the resulting queries may reference an unknown number of tables and/or columns and may return unknown numbers of rows. In addition, the results may mutate depending upon the parameters. There are multiple ways of solving this problem with various levels of efficiency.
This presentation will demonstrate how to handle generic search functionality within an Oracle database by utilizing Dynamic SQL, object collections, and a bit of creativity. Attendees will not only learn to solve problems efficiently using Dynamic SQL -- but solve them securely!

For years security teams have preached the importance of layered security or Defense in Depth. This created a check-the-box mentality among IT practitioners and a whole new market of security products that would theoretically help an organization ìbe secure.î
The problem with this mentality is it focuses on a single point-in-time, for example, preparing for an audit. Boxes are checked, audit is complete, now you can forget about security until the next audit.
This approach misses the mark because while your security configuration will remain stagnant during this period, your data most certainly will not nor will the tactics of your adversaries that want your data. This method leads to a fundamental shift in the approach to security, making data the critical component, not the underlying infrastructure.

Transportable Tablespaces (TTS) have existed since Oracle 8i, and they are a method used to exchange data between databases in an efficient way. With every new release, the capabilities have been enhanced, for example, Cross-platform TTS (xTSS) in Oracle 10g or Restore Foreign Tablespace/Datafile in Oracle 12c.
In the last few months, I was involved in a customer project where the main goal was to upgrade/migrate an existing Oracle 11gR2 databases to 19c (including the switch to the CDB architecture). For a lot of databases, the TTS approach was used.
This presentation summarizes the experiences gathered with the TTS procedure including all ups and downs. After an introduction to TTS itself, different methods of copying the datafiles are presented - for example, DBMS_FILE_TRANSFER or Foreign Tablespace/Datafile Restore with RMAN. The next part of the presentation covers pitfalls and challenges with the actual data migration.
New features and enhancements introduced with 19c and 21c are also part of the presentation.

What do you need to build a fully automated DBaaS stack? Hardware, Software, and a heterogeneous team with a passion for automation. I am proud to be part of the team which has ramped up in the last months a DBaaS for a large Swiss customer with a huge bandwidth of technology. From PCA to ZDLRA, from VMWare vRA to Ansible Tower, from Jira Tasks to Scaled Agile Framework, each team member brought in his expertise to bring the service to the market.
I will show you what you need to build such a service from scratch. And what I can tell you, the passionate team is the key to success. I am not talking only about tech stuff, we want to see what is required in the back, and how long the way is from the first sprint planning to customer readiness.
Since 2007 I have been working in the area of Oracle databases and middleware products. I have a degree in Computer Science Engineering, am an Oracle Database Cloud Certified Administrator and have completed Module 1 as an adult educator (AWeb) at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland in Basel. I work for Trivadis - Part or Accenture as a Platform Architect for our customers and teach courses on topics such as Oracle Architecture and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure OCI. And since June 2020, I am an Oracle ACE Associate.
I live with my family in Switzerland in a small village at the southern foot of the Jura, centrally located in relation to the centers of Berne, Basel and Zurich. Graphs are a different way of looking at data, and a graph data model provides new insights based on the connections and relationships in data. The graph feature of Oracle Database enables developers to create graphs from database tables, search for graph patterns, and apply graph algorithms to data.

Business rules define the requirements that data needs to satisfy so that it is fully valid for the business. A PL/SQL Table API provides a centralized location for the code you write to represent those business rules. Regardless of your development environment -- APEX, ADF, MAF, JET, MAX, VB/VB Studio, Java, JavaScript, or any other framework -- using a Table API to implement business rules validations has many benefits including better performance, reduced cloud database costs, simplification of user interface code, and more secure applications.
This session explains the benefits of this kind of centralized code in more detail and gives advice about how to incorporate it into your development practices. It then focuses on the code components and strategies relevant to using a PL/SQL Table API. In addition, the session discusses several methods for calling Table API code. The presentation also describes and demonstrates methods for automatically generating a large part of the code and shows examples of generated code as well as code that calls the Table API.

The Latest Persistent Memory such as Intel Optane Persistent Memory (PMEM) combines near-DRAM performance with the data persistence of storage. It can be configured in memory mode or application direct mode. When memory mode is used, PMEMs can be considered as volatile and can be used as main memory and DRAM is treated as a write-back cache. PMEMs can also be configured in application direct mode to store database files and redo logs.
This presentation will discuss the use cases of PMEM:
1) In memory mode, using PMEMs for Oracle In Memory store.
2) in App-direct mode to store the database files. We will discuss this App-direct mode as supported with Oracle Memory Speed File system (OMS) in 19c and directly mapped buffer cache and Persistent Memory Filestore (PMEM Filestore) in Oracle 21c.
We will also discuss the significant performance benefits that can be achieved from either of these two modes.

Having made his start in the pharmacy sector, Michel transitioned to IT in 1996, working on a UNIX TTY terminal-based system and the MUMPS language. He currently works as a solutions architect at Qualogy, with a focus on middleware, application integration and service-oriented architecture. His passion for middleware started in 2000 with middleware such as BEA WebLogic and Tuxedo. Michel is an expert on the WebLogic platform. He serves customers in his role as architect and advises them in all aspects of their IT landscape. He became an Oracle ACE in 2012 and ACE Director in 2019. He wrote two books about WebLogic: Oracle WebLogic Server 11gR1 PS2: Administration Essentials and Oracle WebLogic Server 12c: First Look.

Learn how to quickly and easily build a Shopping Cart app with APEX. Using this app, administrators can manage products, customers, and stores. On the other side, customers can review and add products to the cart and eventually proceed to checkout.
You start with installing a sample dataset and then building the app with pages such as Dashboard, Products, and multiple reports. Then, you add pages such as Orders and Shopping Cart. Lastly, you will be updating some of the components to improve the initial app.
The application will have two application roles:
- Administrators
- To manage the products, customers, and stores.
- To run a dashboard to identify the top products.
- Customers
- To review, add, delete, or edit the number of products in the shopping cart.
- To submit orders.

Designing is one of the most crucial stages of the software development process and a good DB architecture is one of the keys to good quality systems. Unfortunately, bad decisions made at the database design stage can have a very negative impact on the performance and management of the system and in extreme cases itís a real horror to handle. These errors are enormously costly -- fixing is very time-consuming and often requires refactoring and redesigning a large part of the system. The good news is that with some planning and thinking, these real horror cases can be avoided and a good design can be a solid base for our software.
In this session, we will investigate some of these extreme cases and their impact on the system, and hopefully, just like most horror movies, weíll manage to beat the monsters.

The cloud is changing many things. Even the decision to not (yet) adopt cloud is one to make explicitly. Now is a time for any organization to reconsider the IT landscape. For each system we should make a conscious ruling on its roadmap. The 6R model suggests six ways to move a system forward.
This session uses the 6R model and applies it specifically to Oracle technology based systems: what are the options and considerations for Oracle Database, Oracle Fusion Middleware, custom applications, and other red components? What future should we consider and how do we choose? The paths chosen by several Oracle-heavy users is presented to illustrate these options and the decision making process. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Autonomous Database play a role, as do Azure IaaS and Azure Managed Database as well as on premises systems. Latency, recovery, scalability, licenses, automation, lock-in, skills, and resources all make their appearance.

Oracle Database includes Oracle Scheduler, an enterprise job scheduler to help you simplify the scheduling of hundreds or even thousands of tasks. Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance (ZDLRA) is an Engineered System and part of the Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) family, too. But do you know that is the only product listed to be used in all MAA architectures, from Bronze to Platinum? And do you know why?
This session focuses on the MAA architecture references, and on an understanding of why Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) concepts are so important. It explains why (and how) you, with a single ZDLRA, bring down RPO to zero for all of your databases. This session is not about ZDLRA features, but why you need to look at ZDLRA beyond just a fast backup perspective.

The open-source project Liquibase helps you manage schema changes by writing simple JSON or YAML documents. Liquibase makes it easy to deploy to different flavors of databases and roll changes back and forward.
Ansible is an open-source automation tool that enables you to define and run tasks on a set of remote targets. Like Liquibase change logs, Ansible playbooks are JSON or YAML documents.
Both tools together enable you to effectively version control your database schema changes and deploy them to multiple hosts simultaneously.

Starting with 12c Release 1, Oracle introduced a completely new architecture concept for its database - the Container Database. With this new architecture, new challenges came up, but with the same breath a wide branch of new opportunities.
The presentation will address the capabilities to create fast and easy new (test) databases or clones for a running production database. Five different ways will be discussed:
- Using Local and Remote Cloning
- Using an Unplugged PDB (predefined master)
- Using Refreshable PDBs as a master for new (test) databases
- Using Data Guard for a limited number of PDBs and its Snapshot Standby capabilities
- Snapshot Carousel
Another point on the agenda is the usage of the Snapshot features of ACFS and Direct NFS to speed up the creation process. At the end of the presentation, a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of each technique will be presented.

Database systems running on modern hardware are no longer constrained by I/O or memory shortage as both of these historic performance bottlenecks have been addressed by hardware technology advancements. The biggest constraint to system performance can now be found in a little-noticed space: the single thread CPU Speed. CPU speed is often overlooked when considering Cloud infrastructure providers, and it can be the difference between a successful "lift and shift" or a migration that moves the company backward from a user experience with system performance.

One of the key differentiators Gartner identified in the latest magic quadrant for data integration tools was their ability to support DataOps.
DataOps, put simply, is DevOps, or automation, for data integration projects. Typically, this includes automated (regression) testing, CI/CD, version control integration, and integration with automation servers like Jenkins. The goal is to support collaborative and agile working in data integration projects.
This presentation outlines what features we think a modern data integration tool should provide to support DataOps. We then go through how each of these features and see how they can be implemented in Oracle Data Integrator (ODI). Version 21c of the Oracle database is the version by which Oracle cuts off old heads and says goodbye to the classic architecture, also known as the non-CDB architecture. Now there are only container databases, and 21c brings with it some new features. New features include better integration into Oracle Cluster, improved isolation of pluggable databases, extended flashback and recovery opportunities.

Markus Flechtner is a Senior DBA with more than 25 years experience in the field of Oracle databases. He started as a developer (Oracle Forms, Oracle Reports, PL/SQL) in the 1990's. Later he spent some years at Oracle Support (Field Support). After some years as a database administrator at a credit agency with some High Availability databases (Oracle RAC, Oracle DataGuard) he joined Trivadis, a Swiss based consulting company, in 2008. Currently, he's a Principal Consultant at Trivadis in Duesseldorf (Germany).
He is specialized on Oracle Real Application Clusters Oracle Multitenant and database upgrade and migration projects. Since 2009 Markus is a teacher at Trivadis. He is a teacher for the following courses Oracle Grid Infrastructure and Real Application Clusters, Oracle Database New Features, Oracle Multitenant and PostgreSQL for Oracle DBAs. Due to this large number of trainings, he is widely known in the German Oracle community.
Additionally, to sharing his knowledge and his wide experience in course and in his blogs (markusdba.de and markusdba.net), he is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences like Oracle Open World, IOUG COLLABORATE, UKOUG Tech, nlOUG Tech Experience, and the DOAG annual conferences.
Markus is an active member of the database community of the German Oracle User Group (DOAG, Deutsche Oracle Anwendergruppe) and a delegate for the annual DOAG meeting. He is co-author of the (German) book ""Der Oracle DBA"" which was published in 2016. He contributed the chapters ""Multitenant"", ""Globalization Support"" and ""Database Upgrades"" to the book.
In 2020 he was nominated an ""Oracle ACE"".

In this session, I will discuss a successful system re-engineering project that involved gathering information on the current system, analyzing requirements, and transforming them into the system of tomorrow. I will walk through the main process I went through: the requirements, design, and PL/SQL code, as well as the changes that allowed us to shorten the processing time. Not only did we improve a single process, but the entire system processing time was reduced from several hours to several minutes.

Efficient applications require the best performance from all components used to present the application. If you are using cloud services, tuning of some components is out of your control. Still, regardless of your use of cloud, your job as an application developer is to ensure that your database code runs as efficiently as possible. It is so much easier to create highly performant code in the first place than to have to fix the code later when you find that it isn't performing well in production.
A small set of PL/SQL coding techniques that help performance have been developed over the years, but those who are relatively new to the language may not have been exposed to them. Those who have experience with PL/SQL may appreciate a review of the performance techniques they have been using.
This presentation explains to both of these audiences the basic techniques for creating the most efficient PL/SQL code, for example, caching local variables, iteration handling, reducing context switching, datatype selection, and various methods for cursor handling. Sample code will illustrate the principles.

The MySQL InnoDB storage engine needs a primary key to work best and how that key is designed impacts how data is retrieved. The lack of a proper primary key can greatly slow things down. Secondary indexes 'piggy back' on the primary key which means a bad primary key hurts more. Plus for every insert, update, or delete, the index and the data table must be update, which can become too much overhead.
Histograms are designed for data that does not churn, and they do not have the overhead of an index. But it may not fit your data.
This session will cover how to properly build indexes and histograms for faster queries.

and simplifies configuration management. Ansible is an open source community project designed to help organizations automate provisioning, configuration management, and application deployment. It not only helps in automating on premise components, but also helps in deploying and managing cloud components.

Using database technologies such as Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), Application Continuity (AC), and Oracle Data Guard, including the Active Data Guard option, his team has helped to ensure 24*7 availability of critical, high-throughput OLTP and DWH database systems around the world and revolutionized the way Oracle’s customers get to experience the Oracle Database on-premises as well as when moving into the cloud using Zero Downtime Migration (ZDM). Applying real-world experience and customer feedback, his team has been instrumental in designing Oracle’s Database Cloud offerings, including Oracle Autonomous Database, following and defining Oracle's industry-leading Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) best practices.
Gerald Venzl is a Distinguished Product Manager for Oracle. During his career, Gerald has worked as a Developer, DBA, Performance Tuner, Software Architect, Consultant and Enterprise Architect prior to his current role, while still being active as a developer in his free time and on open source projects. This allowed Gerald to live several different lives in the IT sector, providing him with a solid understanding of the concerns in these individual areas while gaining a holistic view overall. In his current role Gerald is responsible for improving the developer experience of the Oracle Database and the Oracle Cloud. Besides that, Gerald focuses on advocating how to build systems that provide flexibility yet still meet the needs of the users. He is also a member of the ISO SQL Standard committee.
